The Wizard of Oz Pantomime

The Wizard of Oz Pantomime

SUNDAY DECEMBER 14th

doors 3:30/ show 4pm

TICKETS

Dorothy’s tornado has never looked this fabulous. In this outrageously queer, adults-only British-style Panto, R & R Productions reimagine the Land of Oz with a drag queen Glinda, a gloriously camp Wicked Witch, and a Wizard who feels suspiciously like a tech-bro billionaire with more ego than magic. Flying labubus, savage satire, and brand-new original music collide in a dazzling send-up of The Wizard of Oz, Wicked, and The Wiz that’s as raunchy as it is riotous. Bold and bawdy, the pantomime, or Panto , has been a holiday tradition in Great Britain since 1717. While Pantos are traditionally considered family-friendly entertainment, The Wizard of Oz is strictly for grown-ups. In these times, the fiercest protest might just be a belly laugh, a little glitter, and a trip over the rainbow.

SLOTH 13: GIVING & RECEIVING at The Parkside Lounge

Join SLOTH for the special 3-year extravaganza! Our open mic continues with featured readers and big news! So… slow down and LISTEN IN!

Doors open at 6:00 and stories begin around 7:00pm. Sharers and listeners are all welcome! No story is required to come and enjoy the scene. To sustain our work, there is a $12 entry fee, but we turn no one away for a lack of funds.

On the fence about telling a story? We're here to help you develop it for primetime! Reach out to one of our gracious and beautiful hosts to brainstorm and refine. We'd love to get a glimpse of your inner worlds.

What’s the story theme?

It’s giving season, Slothettes — but we all know it’s rarely that simple. Sometimes, generosity feels easy; sometimes, it costs us something. This December, we’re exploring the stories behind the gifts, the awkward exchanges, the acts of kindness we didn’t see coming, the moments when giving too much (or too little) taught us something real. Tell us about the time you opened your heart, or wallet, or legs, and what happened next. We’re here for it.

What are SLOTH events?

The SLOTH is our queer gathering for friends to share stories inspired by our selected themes. Come to listen or come to tell. We welcome authentic and true(ish) tales, comedy, poetry, music, and any creative form you can put into a compelling 5-minute share. Follow us @sloth.nyc

Readings at Parkside: Stay away from nothing ~ Paul Thek & Peter Hujar

Readings at Parkside:
Stay away from nothing ~
Paul Thek & Peter Hujar

Edited by Francis Schichtel
Published by Primary Information

CELEBRATING THE LAUNCH WITH  READINGS BY
CYNTHIA CARR, NAN GOLDIN & STEPHEN KOCH

Stay away from nothingshines a spotlight on the deep relationship between Paul Thek and Peter Hujar through the artists’ letters and photographs. Beginning in 1956 and spanning two decades, the publication opens a window into their intimate, complex, and beautiful lives, starting with a sequence of images by Hujar that showcases the two of them in innocent moments of pensive and haunting play in Coral Gables and beyond.

These early portraits of their budding relationship are followed by several playful postcards from Thek in 1960 and his first letter to Hujar in 1962, written while the artist is in the Philadelphia harbor aboard a containership bound for Europe. In the letter, Thek is brimming with joy and new discoveries and exclaims that the world “seems bigger and more gloriously strange than ever before in my entire life.” The two eventually meet in Rome, where they both begin to evolve into the icons we know them as today, and the remaining letters trace Thek’s travels and adventures, romantic dalliances, work, and financial ups and downs through 1975. More than fifty letters and postcards, along with drawings and other ephemera, are reproduced inStay away from nothingand their poetic, quotidian, and melancholic tone provide a rare glimpse into Thek and Hujar’s relationship as it wavers with seduction, glamor, tumult, and mischievousness.

Throughout this period, Hujar was photographing Thek in his now-iconic style, capturing him in Italy, in various studios, and on the beaches of Fire Island. Included are the artist’s classic images of Thek in the catacombs in Palermo, as well as his studio portraits of the artist creatingThe Tomb. Among these well-known works are dozens of other photographs, many unpublished until now, including candid portraits of Thek, as well as images of the two artists goofing around or posing for passport photos. Collectively, these images demonstrate not only the complex emotional interiority of Thek but the tender, dark, and hopeful connection between the two artists, lovers, and friends.

An afterword is provided by Andrew Durbin, author ofA Wonderful World that Almost Was, a biography of Peter Hujar and Paul Thek.
